Field and classroom initiatives for portable sequence-based monitoring of dengue virus in Brazil

Adelino TÉR, Giovanetti M, Fonseca V, et al. Field and classroom initiatives for portable sequence-based monitoring of dengue virus in Brazil. Nature Communications. 2021;12(2296).

Serotype heterotypic infections are the highest known risk factor for severe dengue clinical outcomes while the impact of genotype heterotypic infections on clinical outcomes remains unknown. Genomic surveillance of dengue can contribute to a better understanding of the introduction, spread, and persistence of dengue viruses during epidemics that have significant public health impact.

In this study, researchers used a research and educational initiative to generate and analyze 227 novel genome sequences of DENV1 and DENV2 in Brazil. The study offers a method of real-time portable sequencing of viruses utilizing field and classroom initiatives and as such, a way to bolster research and local capacity building in genomic surveillance of viruses. https://doi.org/10.1038/s41467-021-22607-0
